Short answer

The average cold email got 3.43% replies in 2026, and only the top 10% of campaigns clear 10%. Inboxes filled with AI-written, low-effort email, and mail providers got stricter. Campaigns that still get 10% or more do three things: tight lists, human-finished copy, and a clean sending setup.

Key takeaways

  • The 2026 average is 3.43%. The top 25% of campaigns clear 5.5%. The top 10% clear 10.7%.
  • Ask how the rate is counted. One campaign can read as 5% of opened emails or 0.45% of emails sent.
  • AI-written email gets flagged as spam 2.7 times as often as human-written email.
  • The fix is not more volume. It is fewer, better-chosen people and a person finishing every message.

How low are reply rates now?

Low. Instantly, Cold Email Benchmark Report 2026 puts the 2026 average at 3.43%. Only the top 10% of campaigns clear 10%.

Belkins, B2B cold email response rates 2026, counting replies per email sent, found just 0.45% in 2025.

Why did it happen?

Three things landed at the same time.

  1. AI made sending cheap. Anyone can now write 2,000 "personalised" emails before lunch. Buyers learned to spot them in a second.
  2. Gmail and Outlook got stricter. Bulk sender rules, spam-complaint limits and authentication checks mean sloppy setups never reach the inbox at all.
  3. Buyers changed. They research on their own, often in ChatGPT or Perplexity, before they answer anyone. A cold email has to earn its reply.

Are the benchmarks even comparable?

Mostly not. Ask how the rate is counted. Belkins, B2B cold email response rates 2026 shows one campaign can read as 5% of opened emails or 0.45% of emails sent.

Replies can be counted per email sent, per email opened, or per person. When someone quotes a rate, ask what they divided by.

What still works?

The campaigns above 10% share the same habits.

  • A short, tight list. 200 people who fit, not 5,000 who might.
  • A reason to write now. A new hire, a funding round, a new market, a post they wrote last week.
  • A person finishes every message. AI can research and draft. It should not press send. Phrasly, AI vs human cold email reply rates 2026 found AI-written email flagged as spam at 7.8% against 2.9% for human-written.
  • Clean sending. Separate sending domains, warmed inboxes, verified addresses, SPF, DKIM and DMARC set up, volume kept low per inbox.
  • One clear question. No deck, no link, no three paragraphs about you.

What we do differently

We treat email as one channel of three. When email underperforms in a market, we move weight to LinkedIn or WhatsApp instead of forcing it. In one freight software campaign our founder led in Southeast Asia, email had the lowest reply rate of the three channels, while 925 WhatsApp messages replied at 34.4%. Following the numbers beat defending the plan.

Questions people ask

What is a good cold email reply rate in 2026?

The average is about 3.4%. Above 5.5% puts you in the top quarter. Above 10.7% puts you in the top tenth, and that usually means a small, well-researched list.

Should I stop cold email?

No. Stop bad cold email. Keep it for markets where buyers live in their inbox, and run it alongside LinkedIn and WhatsApp.

Does AI-written email work?

AI drafts help. AI sending alone does not. Hybrid, AI research plus a human finish, got the most replies in the 2026 test we trust most. Its spam rate was close to human-written.

How many emails should one inbox send a day?

Keep daily sends per inbox low, and spread them across several warmed inboxes on separate domains.
